Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani, has described Governor Peter Mbah’s recent defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a strategic and welcome development for the South East region, saying the move would strengthen the zone’s position in Nigeria’s mainstream political structure.

Reacting to public criticisms that trailed the Enugu State governor’s decision, Sani said Mbah’s defection should not be seen as an act of betrayal but rather as a bold step to rescue the South East from political isolation and irrelevance at the federal level.

Speaking with journalists shortly after attending the United Africa Development Initiative Summit held at Merit House, Abuja, Senator Sani stated:“Governor Mbah’s defection to the APC is a blessing to the South Eastern part of the country. It is a strategic decision that will factor the region into the mainstream political equation in Nigeria.”

The former senator argued that those accusing the governor of betrayal were being unfair, noting that members of the Labour Party (LP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) had also defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the past.

“Why should LP and ADC members be angry with a PDP member who joined the APC when many of them also left the PDP earlier? Politics is about alignment and strategy, not sentiment,” he stated.

Sani further maintained that Mbah’s defection would open new political opportunities for the South East, saying it had “raised the chances of the region rather than diminished them.”

Describing the move metaphorically, he added:“Mbah’s defection is like taking the goods of the South East to a bigger market where the action is.”

He, therefore, urged political leaders and stakeholders in the region to rally around the governor and use his new platform to push for greater inclusion, development, and representation at the national level.

The Progressives Unity and Development Forum (PUDF) has issued a stern warning that the planned nationwide protest for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, could trigger widespread violence and chaos across the country.

The protest, scheduled for October 20, is being championed by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and rights activist Omoyele Sowore, who has described the date for the “peaceful march” to Aso Rock Villa as “sacrosanct.” The planned action, according to its organisers, is intended to pressure the Federal Government to release Kanu, who has been in detention since his re-arrest in 2021.

However, the PUDF expressed deep concern that the protest could be hijacked by hoodlums and political opportunists. In a strongly worded statement, the group cautioned that the rally might be used by criminal elements to unleash terror and target government institutions, thereby plunging the nation into unrest.

The forum recalled past incidents in Kano, Kaduna, and Lagos, where peaceful demonstrations quickly degenerated into violent confrontations that led to massive destruction of public and private property. “Sowore should be told now, before the D-day, that similar protests in the past spiraled out of control and caused untold hardship to ordinary Nigerians,” the PUDF warned.

The group urged IPOB, Sowore, and their allies to reconsider the planned protest and explore more constructive and civic means of engagement with the government.

It also called on the nation’s security agencies to remain alert and proactive to prevent any form of breakdown of law and order, while appealing to Nigerians not to allow themselves to be used by those “seeking to destabilize the country under the guise of activism.”

Kaduna State has scored another milestone as Hon. Rabi Salisu, Commissioner for Women Affairs, was unanimously elected Leader of the Forum of Women Commissioners from APC-governed States.

The election took place on October 7, 2025, at the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) Agenda Setting Meeting in Abuja. The forum brings together Women Affairs Commissioners from 23 APC states to drive transformative leadership, economic empowerment, and inclusive governance.

Delegates hailed Salisu’s election as a win for Kaduna, highlighting her dynamic leadership and Governor Uba Sani’s commitment to women empowerment.

The Commissioners also lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reforms, called for stronger federal-state collaboration, and vowed greater accountability in women’s empowerment initiatives.

Salisu’s new role marks a fresh momentum for cross-state collaboration and progressive governance.

The wedding of Nasirudeen Abdul’aziz Yari and his bride, Safiya Shehu Idris, on Friday, September 19, 2025, in Kaduna, has been described by the Yari family as a “moment of profound joy and gratitude.”

Held at the historic Sultan Bello Mosque, the event attracted a diverse gathering of political leaders, religious figures, business executives, and friends from across Nigeria and beyond.

In its committed drive to deliver on the Renewed Hope Initiative of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the Federal Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation, in partnership with the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), has successfully inaugurated the National Energy Masterplan Implementation Committee (NEMIC).

The inauguration of the committee members took place during a high-level ceremony held at the Minister’s Conference Room, with the Chairman/National Coordinator, Co-Chairman, and Members in attendance.

The event, which marked a historic milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector reform efforts, underscored the Federal Government’s determination to deliver a coordinated and sustainable energy transition under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Others in attendance included senior government officials, development partners, representatives of the private sector, civil society organizations, and international stakeholders, all of whom expressed strong support for the Masterplan’s implementation.

In his welcome address, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, emphasized that the National Energy Masterplan serves as a comprehensive blueprint to ensure energy security, expand access to reliable electricity, promote renewable energy, and reduce Nigeria’s carbon footprint in line with global climate goals.

Goodwill messages delivered by development partners, ministries, and other stakeholders reflected a shared commitment to building strong institutional frameworks, mobilizing investments, and strengthening technical capacities to drive the Masterplan’s successful implementation.

Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to modernizing the energy sector, strengthening public-private partnerships, and promoting indigenous innovation in energy technologies.

The Minister stressed that the work of NEMIC would be critical in ensuring that Nigeria’s energy infrastructure keeps pace with industrial growth, population expansion, and environmental sustainability imperatives.

​Nearly two years into Governor Uba Sani’s administration, a troubling pattern has emerged: a preference for symbolism over substance. His government has relied heavily on “groundbreaking ceremonies”—carefully staged events that create headlines and photo opportunities—yet the physical progress on the ground remains alarmingly slow.

​This strategy became even more visible after recent political developments, including former Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s visit and the activities of the ADC, which appeared to unsettle the governor. In response, the administration embarked on a fresh wave of groundbreakings. However, rather than convincing Kaduna residents, these ceremonies are increasingly seen as attempts to shape perceptions in Abuja and beyond, while the reality at home tells a different story.

​Take the Kafanchan metropolis as a case study. El-Rufai initiated around 12 major road projects toward the end of his administration, completing two in a short time and leaving ten at various levels of progress. When Uba Sani took office, work was still ongoing at the site before it stopped due to a fabricated allegation and a failed attempt to prove Nasir El-Rufai’s fault. Nearly two years later, Governor Sani has completed just one project—and that one was already near completion under his predecessor. This track record translates to one success out of ten, a failure by any reasonable measure. The same pattern is evident in Zaria, Rigasa, and Zango, where several projects remain uncompleted despite repeated announcements.

​Quality is another growing concern. The few projects handled under the current administration raise questions about contractor competence, the durability of construction, and even basic elements such as streetlights and drainage. Poor execution risks leaving the state with infrastructure that not only falls short of expectations but also requires premature repairs.

​The paradox is that these failures cannot be explained by a lack of resources. On the contrary, Governor Uba Sani’s government has benefited from unprecedented revenues. Monthly FAAC allocations have more than doubled compared to El-Rufai’s era, rising from an average of ₦4 billion to between ₦8 and ₦10 billion. Beyond this, the state has accessed multiple grants and loans, in addition to the alleged ₦150 billion loan mentioned by El-Rufai himself. The Kaduna Internal Revenue Service also claims to be generating more than it did under the previous administration. With this financial profile, excuses about debt servicing ring hollow.

​The central question remains: where is the money going?

​Despite these favorable financial conditions, Uba Sani’s results fall far short of El-Rufai’s. Where his predecessor left behind tangible infrastructure—from roads and hospitals to urban renewal projects—the current administration has delivered little beyond ceremonies, promises, and propaganda.

​For Kaduna citizens, groundbreaking events do not build roads, equip hospitals, or generate jobs. They are, at best, optics. At worst, they are distractions. Unless Governor Sani shifts from symbolic politics to practical governance, history may judge his tenure as one defined not by transformation, but by theatrics.

The Human Rights Alliance of Nigeria (HRAN) has issued a scathing rebuke of former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, demanding that he immediately honour the invitation extended to him by the Kaduna State Police Command in the interest of upholding the rule of law.

The Command had reportedly summoned El-Rufai alongside six top members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over alleged conspiracy, incitement, mischief, and disturbance of public peace in the state.

The rights group, however, expressed outrage that instead of submitting himself to the authorities, El-Rufai chose to lodge a petition against the state’s Commissioner of Police, Muhammad Rabiu, accusing him of “unprofessional conduct, abuse of office, and serial violations.”

In a strongly worded statement signed by its spokesperson, Abraham Tar, HRAN described El-Rufai’s actions as arrogant and contemptuous of constituted authority, insisting that such conduct was unbecoming of a former governor and a man who once wielded significant public trust.

“We are saddened that instead of honouring the invitation, he decided to petition the Police Service Commission, an act that undermines the principles of accountability and respect for the law,” the group said.

The group recalled that several former governors in Nigeria, including Yahaya Bello of Kogi State, Attahiru Bafarawa of Sokoto State, and Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, had previously honoured police invitations without hesitation.

“Since others before him have submitted themselves to investigation when invited, there is no reason why El-Rufai should act differently,” HRAN added.

The rights group further warned that political leaders who trample on the authority of the police send dangerous signals to ordinary citizens, thereby weakening Nigeria’s democratic institutions. It urged leaders across the country to set positive examples by demonstrating humility and respect for due process.

According to HRAN, El-Rufai’s refusal to comply is not just a personal affront to the police command but also a brazen assault on the rule of law in Nigeria.

The Southern Kaduna People’s Union, youth wing, has urged all leaders, past and present, to weigh their words carefully and act in ways that foster peace, unity, and mutual respect among all Nigerians.

The youths, therefore, called on former Kaduna State governor, Malami Nasir el-Rufai, to the interest peace retract his offensive statements and tender an unreserved apology to the people of Southern Kaduna.

Briefing newsmen in Kaduna on Wednesday, Comrade Solomon Simon, it’s National Coordinator said, “The people of Southern Kaduna will not be distracted by this attempt to cast them in a negative light. We remain focused on building bridges of understanding and contributing positively to the development of our society.”

Speaking on the recent statement made by former governor el-Rufai, he explained that his words may stir controversy but they cannot hide the truth, saying that Kaduna State belongs to all its citizens equally, Christians and Muslims, Hausa and non-Hausa alike.

Simon noted, “It is disappointing that instead of promoting harmony and mutual respect, el-Rufai chose the path of division and prejudice. Leadership and public engagement demand responsibility; words carry weight and must be used to heal, not to wound; to unite, not to divide.

“We wish to state categorically that people of Southern Kaduna are known for their resilience, hospitality, and commitment to nation building. No amount of reckless speech can erase our history of sacrifice, patriotism, and development.”

He alleged that the former governor’s entire life is built on “half-truths and deception spews yet another cocktail of lies”, saying that it should not surprise anyone but worrisome to some Nigerians that may take his words at face value.

He further explained that they feel obliged to set the record straight, not because his falsehoods carry weight, but for the sake of some people that may not understand him too well, and above all, to defend the dignity of their r people, alleging that the reason behind El-Rufai’s renewed hatred against Southern is that when his name surfaced for ministerial nomination, they petitioned the National Assembly and duly copied all relevant agencies.

“In that petition, we laid out in detail why he was unfit to hold public office, citing his undemocratic style of governance, serial violations of human rights, persistent disregard for court orders, abuse of civil service rules and procedures, and suppression of press freedom during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State. It was this weight of evidence that guided the National Assembly’s decision to withhold his confirmation, and it remains the root of his deep-seated hostility toward our region,” the National Coordinator explained.

Simon noted that following the 2023 general elections, a leaked video exposed el-Rufai boasting about being an architect of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, stressing that in that same recording, he bragged that the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had been silenced, and went on to predict that another Muslim-Muslim arrangement would succeed the Tinubu administration.

He also alleged, “True to his divisive mindset, and consistent with his discriminatory treatment of Christians in Southern Kaduna—El-Rufai expected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to marginalize Christians across Nigeria. To his utmost disappointment, the reverse has been the case. Southern Kaduna today stands as one of the major beneficiaries of the Tinubu administration, with landmark projects such as the University of Applied Sciences, a Federal Medical Centre, and several other development initiatives.”

He opined that the progress is what has fueled the bitterness behind El-Rufai’s latest tirade, saying that his anger is not about truth or justice but frustration of a man whose narrative has been defeated by the reality of Southern Kaduna’s growing relevance in the Nigerian project.
