Abuja — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has intervened decisively in a high-stakes legal battle, ordering the immediate withdrawal of all charges against the Chairman of EFAB Properties and directing a fresh, unfettered inquiry into the original dispute.

The decision, which has effectively halted the prosecution of the EFAB chief, follows weeks of intense lobbying and the release of a damning petition by a coalition of civil society organisations (CSOs) accusing the Police Special Tactical Squad (STS) of judicial corruption, abuse of office, and acting as a private enforcement tool for a suspected serial land grabber.

Fresh Inquiry Ordered

According to a police wireless message seen by this reporter, the IGP mandated that the case file be withdrawn from the STS and transferred to a neutral investigative unit for a comprehensive, evidence-driven review. All prosecutorial steps are hereby suspended pending the outcome of the new inquiry.

A senior police source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed that the IGP was “deeply troubled” by the contradictions in the case file, particularly the fact that two different police formations were simultaneously investigating the same parties over the same land dispute.

CSOs Raise Alarm Over STS Conduct

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, Professor Barika Dominic Saro Laka of The Mighty One Empowerment Foundation, who spoke on behalf of a coalition of over a dozen CSOs, accused the STS of abandoning professional standards.

“What we are witnessing is a dangerous template. A man who has been indicted by the EFCC and the regular police for land grabbing suddenly becomes a complainant before the STS, and the actual victim is handcuffed and paraded as a criminal,” Professor Laka charged.

He further alleged that the STS obtained a Direct Criminal Investigation order to arraign one Mr. Nworah without conducting any preliminary investigation worthy of the name. “They filed charges first and looked for evidence later. That is not policing; that is persecution,” he added.

The coalition also raised a troubling question: how could the STS ignore the existence of a prior police investigation and a separate EFCC case on the same subject matter? They described the situation as “a classic case of forum shopping and an attempt to pervert the course of justice.”

“Serial Land Grabber Turned Victim”

The CSOs alleged that the EFAB Chairman was the legitimate owner of the disputed property but was being targeted because he had refused to succumb to intimidation and illegal eviction tactics.

“In a sane society, the serial land grabber would be in a cell. But here, he walks free, and the STS is doing his bidding. The judiciary must take note,” Professor Laka stated.

The coalition warned that if left unchecked, the STS’s actions would embolden wealthy criminals to hijack state security apparatuses to silence their opponents and legitimise their crimes.

Media Cautioned

The coalition also appealed to journalists to resist the temptation of publishing one-sided, unverified press releases sponsored by the accused land grabber.

“An accused person cannot use media propaganda to shout down criminal allegations. The press must verify before disseminating. Justice is not a reality TV show,” the coalition’s statement read.

“A New Standard for Accountability”

Describing the IGP’s intervention as “bold and commendable,” the CSOs expressed cautious optimism that the fresh inquiry would uncover the truth and lead to the prosecution of the real offenders—both the suspected land grabber and any police officers who aided his scheme.

“We can never achieve justice through the route of injustice. The IGP has today set a new standard for police accountability. We urge him to go a step further by disciplining all STS officers implicated in this sordid affair,” said Pastor Oka, another coalition spokesperson.

The coalition vowed to monitor the fresh inquiry closely and promised to expose any attempt to whitewash the findings.

“As far as we are concerned, this case is a litmus test for the Nigeria Police Force under the current leadership. The world is watching,” Professor Laka concluded.

FCT-Abuja — Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi has officially accepted the call to run for the Federal Capital Territory Senate seat, following widespread appeals from stakeholders, youth, women, and residents across the territory.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Abdullahi formally declared his intention to contest for the position of Senator at the National Assembly, pledging to represent the interests, aspirations, and future of all FCT residents with dedication and integrity.

“I, Hon. Abubakar Umar Abdullahi, humbly answer the call of the good people of the FCT and hereby declare my intention to contest for the position of Senator to represent our great territory at the National Assembly,” he said.

The aspirant expressed deep gratitude to his supporters and well-wishers, stating: “I sincerely appreciate each and every one of you for your trust, confidence, and belief in my leadership.”

Abdullahi also emphasized his belief in divine guidance, noting that leadership comes from Almighty Allah, who grants it to whom He wills. “We pray that He makes us the best choice and grants us victory. Ameen,” he added.

He concluded his declaration with a call for unity and collective progress, saying, “Together, we can make the FCT greater.”

The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL), alongside the Forum for Youth Development Unity & Peace Initiative and 11 other civil society organisations, has lauded the Chairman of the Military Pensions Board, Air Vice Marshal Mikail Abdulraheem, for what it described as impactful reforms and disciplined leadership in the administration of military pensions.

In a statement issued on Wednesday and made available to journalists, the coalition said the Board under Abdulraheem has distinguished itself as a model of transparency, efficiency, and accountability—particularly in ensuring the timely and consistent payment of entitlements to retired military personnel.

President of AYAGL, Ambassador Abdul Danbature, who signed the statement on behalf of the coalition, noted that the current administration of the Board represents a clear shift from years of delays and administrative setbacks that had long plagued pension management in the military.

“The timely and consistent payment of retired military personnel under his leadership is not just commendable—it is exemplary and transformative,” Danbature stated.

He observed that pension administration within the military had historically been burdened by inefficiencies, but stressed that recent reforms have significantly improved service delivery, restoring confidence among retirees.

According to the coalition, notable strides recorded by the Board include improved operational efficiency, elimination of bureaucratic bottlenecks, and the adoption of a people-oriented approach that places priority on accountability and the welfare of pensioners.

The group also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Abdulraheem to lead the Board, describing the decision as both strategic and productive. While urging the Military Pensions Board to sustain and consolidate the gains made, the coalition called on other government agencies to emulate the Board’s standards of efficiency and service delivery.

Renames Engineering Faculty Complex As Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha Complex.

To marki a significant step in expanding renewable energy deployment across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions, Nigeria’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, alongside the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, flagged off a 2-megawatt solar mini-grid project and commissioned 200 solar-powered streetlights at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology (ADUSTECH), Wudil, Kano State.

The intervention, implemented under ECN’s renewable energy and sustainable power programme, is aimed at improving electricity supply on campus, enhancing security through solar-powered lighting, and strengthening research and innovation in clean energy technologies.

Speaking at the event, the Minister commended ECN’s technical leadership, noting that, “The Energy Commission of Nigeria has done exemplary technical work to bring us to this point, following rigorousT energy audits, demand assessments, and validated system specifications.”

He further stressed accountability and timely delivery, stating that, “The contractor has a clear, firm mandate:to deliver within three months, to specification, with no tolerance for variation, and my ministry will hold them to that mandate.

The highlight of the event was the formal renaming of the Engineering Faculty Complex as the Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha Complex, in recognition of his contributions to national energy development, institutional collaboration, and the advancement of renewable energy solutions in Nigeria.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai, also honoured the Director-General, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, with an Outstanding Award, noting that the recognition reflects his exceptional achievements and enduring impact in the energy sector.

Dr. Mustapha, who was among the 2009 graduating class of the university’s Faculty of Engineering, described the moment as both significant and symbolic, reflecting a full-circle journey from student to national energy leader.

The ceremony was attended by the Emir of Gaya, Alhaji Aliyu Abdulkadir; the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasai; and the Director-General of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex (SHESTCO), Dr. Magaji Da’u Aliyu.

Speaking, Dr. Mustapha reaffirmed ECN’s commitment to accelerating Nigeria’s energy transition through practical, impact-driven projects that expand access to clean and reliable electricity, particularly within educational institutions.

He noted that the 2MW solar mini-grid represents a scalable model for decentralized energy solutions, while the 200 solar-powered streetlights will significantly improve safety and extend academic and social activities within the university environment.

The Director-General sincerely appreciated His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for this laudable initiative, which continues to drive sustainable energy development and expand access to clean power across the nation.

The Arewa Youth Assembly for Good Leadership (AYAGL) has praised the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari, describing his tenure as a defining period marked by reforms, transparency and humanitarian impact.

In a press statement issued and signed by its President, Ambassador Abdul Danbature, the group said Kyari’s leadership from 2019 to 2025 repositioned the national oil company and restored public confidence in the petroleum sector.

AYAGL noted that Kyari introduced the Transparency, Accountability and Performance (TAPE) agenda, which it said transformed operational standards within NNPCL. It highlighted the consistent publication of audited financial statements as a major shift from decades of opacity in the sector.

The group also credited him with driving the commercialization of NNPCL in line with the Petroleum Industry Act, alongside improvements in operational efficiency through digitisation and stronger governance structures.

On fuel pricing, AYAGL said Kyari demonstrated strategic leadership during Nigeria’s transition to deregulation. It noted that his approach helped maintain relative stability in fuel supply and pricing despite global market volatility, including during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The statement further acknowledged investments in critical infrastructure under his leadership, including the rehabilitation of refineries in Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna, as well as progress on the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano Gas Pipeline Project. It added that enhanced pipeline surveillance contributed to efforts to curb crude oil theft.

AYAGL said Kyari’s “Decade of Gas” initiative laid a foundation for cleaner energy development and industrial growth, while also strengthening Nigeria’s position in global energy diplomacy.

A former Administrator of Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Hon. (Dr.) Nita Byack George, has formally declared her intention to contest for the House of Representatives seat for Zangon-Kataf/Jaba Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections. She will be running under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking during her declaration at the APC Party Office in Zonkwa, George said her decision to join the race was driven by a strong sense of duty, years of grassroots engagement, and the urgent need to deliver practical governance to the people.

“I have not come merely to declare an ambition; I have come to answer a call—one rooted in my record of service, the urgency of our times, and the political moment before us,” she said.

A Record of Service and Grassroots Engagement

George, who highlighted nearly two decades of community engagement, pointed to her track record in peacebuilding, women empowerment, and infrastructure development as evidence of her readiness for higher responsibility.

She referenced several key initiatives:

· Farmers/Herders Peace Treaty: Promoted dialogue and reduced communal tensions.

· Sha’ruwa Lafia Project: Improved access to clean drinking water.

· Taimakon Jarin Mata: A programme focused on empowering women economically.

According to her, her experience as a local government administrator demonstrated that governance could be “disciplined, accountable, and close to the people.”

She also addressed young people and persons with disabilities, assuring them that her campaign would prioritise their needs through policies and budgetary provisions that create real opportunities.

The declaration event followed the commissioning of her campaign office in Kwoi and the inauguration of her campaign structure, including the Team Nita Network (TNN).

George called on the people of Zangon-Kataf/Jaba to support her candidacy, promising responsive and impactful representation.

“I am ready to serve, and with your support, we will achieve greater things together,” she said.

A group, NdIgbo for Tinubu 2027 Forum (NDI-ABAT), has cautioned former Anambra State governor, Mr. Peter Obi, over his continued assertion that he won the 2023 presidential election, warning that such remarks could heighten political tensions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Secretary General, Dr. Ugwuoke Ugwuoke the group described Mr. Obi’s repeated claims as misleading, saying they risk deepening political divisions if not properly checked.

NDI-ABAT warned that inflammatory political narratives, particularly in a pre-election period, could destabilise the polity, urging political actors to exercise restraint and responsibility in their public engagements.

“The persistent assertion of victory in the 2023 presidential election, despite the declared outcome, risks fuelling unnecessary political tension and public distrust in the democratic process. If not managed responsibly, such narratives may become a source of avoidable unrest in the build-up to 2027″.

The group also urged Mr. Obi to be mindful of the influence of his statements on his supporters, stressing the need for caution in political communication to preserve national stability.

The group further referenced his tenure as governor of Anambra State, alleging shortcomings in governance, including the non-conduct of local government elections during his administration and what it described as limited visible infrastructural development in key sectors.

NDI-ABAT expressed concern that continued disputes over the 2023 election outcome could overshadow national development discussions if political actors fail to moderate their rhetoric.

Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections, the forum reiterated its support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while calling for peaceful political engagement and strict adherence to democratic principles.

The forum urged politicians to avoid statements capable of escalating tensions, insisting that national unity and stability must remain a priority.

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, held a private meeting with former Governor of Zamfara State and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari, in Abuja.

The newspaper Daily Trust reported that the meeting took place at Atiku Abubakar’s residence in Abuja and was conducted behind closed doors without the presence of journalists.

After the meeting, neither of them spoke to the press, and as of the time of filing the report, no official statement had been released explaining the purpose of the meeting.

However, the meeting might not be unconnected with the political calculations surrounding the 2027 presidential elections .

Workers warn that ongoing restructuring risks leaving most visible segment of downstream sector behind

LAGOS, Nigeria – Petrol Station Workers (PSWs) across Nigeria have raised concerns over what they describe as their continued exclusion from ongoing reforms within the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), despite constituting a significant segment of the downstream petroleum workforce.

In a press statement issued on Monday, the workers, under the banner of Concerned Petrol Station Workers, acknowledged NUPENG’s ongoing restructuring efforts—including zonal elections and preparations for a national conference—but argued that such processes have largely sidelined their interests.

The group noted that while the union has taken visible steps to strengthen its institutional framework and advance workers’ rights across the oil and gas sector, Petrol Station Workers remain “largely unstructured, insufficiently protected, and inadequately represented” within its decision-making system.

According to the statement signed by Comrade Ibrahim Zango, the situation is particularly troubling given that NUPENG’s jurisdiction extends across the entire downstream value chain, including petrol filling stations.

“Despite being one of the most visible and numerous categories of workers in the sector, PSWs continue to face poor welfare conditions, weak organisational structures, and limited voice within the union framework,” the statement read.

The workers stressed that their exclusion undermines the core principles of unionisation and collective bargaining, especially at a time when the union is undertaking reforms aimed at improving inclusivity and representation.

They further highlighted the vulnerability of Petrol Station Workers, citing widespread issues such as exploitation, poor remuneration, and lack of social protection.

Demands

The group is now calling on NUPENG leadership to formally recognise and integrate Petrol Station Workers into its structure nationwide. Specifically, they demanded:

· Creation of a defined PSW structure across all zones
· Inclusion of their representatives in ongoing zonal elections and national conference processes
· Development of policies that address their welfare and safety
· Establishment of a clear framework for the organisation, registration, and protection of Petrol Station Workers across the country

“The ongoing reforms present a historic opportunity to correct longstanding imbalances and ensure that no segment of the workforce is left behind,” the statement added.

The workers reaffirmed their commitment to industrial harmony while expressing readiness to engage constructively with union leadership to secure better representation within the sector.
